Postural training & Ergonomic assessment
This can be done onsite at your work place with a full written report, advice on what products and arrangement for supply, installation and set up of them.
It can be done within a treatment scenario – if you are thinking about home use.
It includes full HSE checks of the work station set up and training on how to improve things for yourself to alleviate any further injury or discomfort

Postural Study
 The Beginning |
The Beginning (Normal work posture):
- Patient is 6'2" and working at a standard desk 72cm - setup contibutes to poor posture and the patient's lower back and neck condition.
- Chair set too low – so that he is cramped
- Legs cramped up and bottom forward on the chair
- Kyphotic stance in thoracic and cervical spine
- 90° angle of elbows causing wrists to be cocked leading to pressure on the median nerve – carpal tunnel/RSI strain
- LCD screen too low compounding the forward curvature
|
Chair Raised |
Chair Raised:
- Hips higher than knees to aid circulation to the groin and knee
- Bottom at the back of the chair
Enabling:
- lumbar support whatever position he sits in
- over the pivotal point of the chair so getting the maximum use from the floating tilt mechanism
- Using the back support
- Arms more relaxed
- Less forward kyphotic curvature of the spine
|
Stretch |
Stretch:
- Utilizing the Alexander Technique principal – feeling of a string from the top of the head to lift and elongate the spinal muscles whilst sitting
- You can see that the entire body is more relaxed
- The spine is lengthened – natural spinal curves are being allowed – gives more freedom to use the muscles of the torso correctly
|
Core Stability and using the body |
Core Stability and using the body:
- Bottom at the back of the chair
- Hips higher than knees
- Feet light on the floor – to enable flexibility of feet and ankles, to increase circulation by aiding venous return from the feet
- Shoulders and arms relaxed
- Spine straight yet relaxed
- Lungs free – to aid increased deep respiration, so stimulating muscles and the brain with increased oxygenated blood to the system
|
Training (the finishing touches) |
Training (the finishing touches):
- Educating people about their bodies is key
- Motivation point to sit forward to work is no longer the eyeline, but the stomach muscles – feeling of hinging in the hip
- A sense of lifting from the solar plexus
- There is nothing heavy about the body (lethargic), it is all connected and proactive in sitting
- Muscles are engaged and stimulated (increasing energy)
|
Adjustments |
Adjustments:
- It is imperative to have the desk at the correct height – standard is 72cm for most desking this is very limiting for tall and short people alike – it often doesn't matter if you have a wonderful chair it will not help you if you cannot sit over your work.
- VDU screen needs to be at correct height for the individual user – touch typist at eye level, non touch typist 2" below.
